From The Battle of Griswoldville by Charles F. Wells. we find that “Professor E. M. Coulter [an eminent Georgia scholar] said Jeff Davis’s simplicity of manner and kindness was shone when he shook hands with forty negro workmen from a pistol factory in Griswold, Georgia.”
In this little-known battle in central Georgia, young boys and old men filled the ranks of state militia units who fought an ill-fated encounter with Sherman’s veteran troops. There are reports that blacks fought alongside the state troops at Griswoldville,
