First shot: On May 1, 1863, the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, in the American Civil War, commenced. The following day, Jackson was unintentionally fired at by his own men while conducting reconnaissance with members of his staff. The “friendly fire” event was brought on by the 18th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Jackson received three blows.
Second shooting: On July 1, 2020, Virginia workers in Richmond removed the Confederate General Stonewall Jackson statue from its pedestal on Monument Avenue. The statue was erected in 1919 to remember Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson Jackson, a former instructor at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) who founded the first black Sunday school to teach African Americans how to read the Bible and uphold Christian beliefs, which was against Virginia law.
