Heroes by Force is a 250-page illustrated search directory of black confederate books, with a listing of 5,000 by slave names, state divisions, militia, and volunteers. Author Gregory Newson used a variety of resources to develop the book. These include information from:
- National and state archives
- Confederate pension records, service records, land grants, and slave narratives
- Books, old newspaper listings, muster rolls, and prisoner-of-war documents
