Cannon Fodder—Abraham Lincoln did reach the conclusion that black soldiers in the Union army were a military necessity, but black slave males from the North and South were used as cannon fodder who clamored to enlist in a failed attack on Fort Wagner. Blacks were poorly used and trained by white commanders who put them into impossible tactical situations; 256 black soldiers were slaughtered from the Massachusetts 54th, and only 12 Confederate soldiers were killed.
