Slave males from the North and South clamored to enlist because of a failed attack on Fort Wagner. But blacks were poorly used and trained by white commanders who put them into impossible tactical situations, 256 black soldiers were slaughtered from the Massachusetts 54th, and only 12 Confederate soldiers were killed.
