Stand Watie – Born in Georgia, was Cherokee, native American Confederate General in the American Civil War (he was also known as Degataga) and was an assimilationist who believed adopting Anglo-American culture was necessary for the Cherokee to survive. In 1835, he signed the controversial Treaty of New Echota — opposed by the majority of the Cherokee Nation — which ultimately provided the legal basis for the tragic forced relocation known as the Trail of Tears. Watie was one of the few signers to survive the subsequent assassination retaliations.
